Build A Better BevMo

BevMo! currently operates 109 superstores, located in California & Arizona. In March 2007, TowerBrook formally announced its acquisition of BevMo! TowerBrook is a private equity firm with $2.5 billion under management. TowerBrook has committed to making BevMo even more successful. According to BevMo’s CEO, Alan Johnson, sales in 2000 were around $100 million and in 2009 reached well over $500 million. Since Towerbrook’s acquisition of the company, BevMo has opened 40 new stores with plans to open 100 more over the next few years. Clearly, BevMo CAN AFFORD TO DO BETTER.

Workers received written notification from BevMo that effective August 1, all workers' hours would be reduced from full time to part time status.  The letter then stated that as a result of this change, workers would loose eligibility for benefits under the BevMo Health and Welfare Plan. In the letter, workers were offered a transitional period in which they could remain on the BevMo Health and Welfare Plan until January 29, 2011.  However, due to the reduction in hours, many workers are unable to participate in this transitional period because they can no longer afford the employee contribution.  To see the full letter, click here.

In response to the elimination of full time status and benefits, workers held a press conference on Aug. 12 to fight back against the cuts and announce their demands:

Workers Demands:

  • Immediate Restoration of Full Time Positions
  • Immediate Restoration of Health Care Insurance
  • Immediate $1.00 Raise
  • Recognition of our union and commencement of contract negotiations
  • Restoration of our 401K plans contributions

Recommendation For BevMo

BevMo employees want their company to succeed and have a passionate commitment to serve BevMo’s customers in a way that generates long-term value for all of the company’s stakeholders. Recent actions by management have jeopardized this loyalty. Rather than passively accept this downward negative spiral, BevMo employees have joined with customers, community leaders and the UFCW to promote a new way forward. Our recommendations are grounded in experience partnering with the most successful retailers around the country and include:

  • Partnering with employees and customers to establish long-term goals for BevMo.
  • Recognition that full-time positions with health care and a basic retirement plan are more likely to add long-term value to the company.
  • Commitment to following established guidelines for a free and fair representation process that will improve employee productivity as it has with competitors.

We call upon all of the company’s constituents: front-line employees, managers, suppliers, customers, investors and the larger public to join with us to implement these recommendations and secure a brighter future for BevMo.
